Pythagoreanism

[From the name of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras (6th century BCE).]

  1. (metaphysics) An ancient Greek philosophical movement that emphasized mathematics, numerology, and cosmological harmony. Closely related to Pythagoreanism was the religious sect of Orphism, which held similar views but which was more a form of asceticism.
